Year 2 - Habitats
Back to Latest News
This term, Year 2 have been learning about animals and their habitats. From jungles and deserts to oceans and forests, we've been learning all about the different environments animals live in and how they’ve adapted to survive in them.
To put our new knowledge into action, we worked on a fun project: creating habitat dioramas! Everyone got the chance to design their habitats in groups, carefully choosing the right animals and plants for each environment. It was amazing to see the creativity on display.
We used a range of materials for our dioramas making each habitat as realistic as possible. Year 2 carefully thought about the needs of each animal, where they find food, how they stay safe, and what kind of weather they can live in.
When we got back from our trip to the zoo, Year 2 had a huge surprise, a meerkat had snuck onto our bus and was now roaming around the school! We quickly realized we needed to create a temporary habitat to keep the meerkat safe until it could be returned to the zoo. Using everything we’d learned about animals and their habitats, we designed a cozy space that met all of the meerkat’s needs. We thought carefully about what it would need to survive, like a warm, dry space, plenty of room to dig, and some food it might find in the wild. Year 2 loved taking care of our new furry friend!
