Sporting News

Welcome back to a new academic year! Autumn Term has, so far, been full of excitement and activities with even more on the way.

In this issue we will be looking at keeping healthy, body and mind, as well as diving into some of the new clubs available.

Keep reading for an exclusive interview with one of our favourite teachers.

Let’s kick things off with a quick update on some clubs with new and exciting events on the horizon.

Netball

Netball is greatly enjoyed in our school, both during P.E and our invite only netball team. A new year means a new team and everyone was rearing to go when trials were held. The newly selected members have been working hard on sharpening their skills and learning to work together as a team. Their hard work will be put to the test after the Half Term holidays when they participate in a netball league.

Fingers crossed!

Dance

Dance club is full of energetic learners and up-beat songs, led by the talented Miss Lawrence. Learning choreography can be very tricky and complicated but our team of brilliant dancers are always up for a challenge. Keep your eyes and ears open for some exciting news about an upcoming dance competition!

Karate

At Maylands, we have a new karate club where children can learn how to defend themselves. Karate is a great way to centre your mind and let the stress of the day float away. It takes discipline and dedication to make your way through the different coloured belts. We hope to see some newly earned belts soon!

Football

Football activities have been all the buzz around the school recently with loads more on the cards! The Year 5 and 6 team took part in the Premier League tournament held at Drapers’ Academy. Our team scored some amazing goals and really worked well together, showcasing true sportsmanship. The team made it into the top five, which is mightily impressive.

We have much more football planned, so keep watching this space for updates.

Cross-Country

Drapers’ Maylands were lucky enough to be invited to participate in a cross-country event at Stubbers Adventure Centre. The Year 5 and 6 learners who were selected had to run a gruelling 2kms across muddy fields and through wet forests. They showed true determination and resilience by not giving up and finishing the race – even when their legs were screaming at them to stop. A huge congratulations to all learners who took part.

Interview

As part of our ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ theme, we have decided to pick some of our teachers’ brains about what they do to keep healthy.

Our first interview was with Mr Frederick, one of the Year 3 teachers.

What do you think is an important step to a healthy lifestyle?

‘It has to be diet and it has to be fitness. They’re the two things I would think about.’

How are your current behaviours affecting your life right now?

'Well, because I am very strict about my diet, by which I mean what I eat, I don’t eat less, I just eat clean food. I don’t eat processed food.’

What kinds of things have you done in the past to change your eating habits?

‘I don’t eat fast food or drink fizzy drinks, I don’t eat crisps. I try and avoid anything that has been made in vegetable oil as that is not good for you. I swapped from milk chocolate to dark chocolate because that is a superfood. I also try and minimise the amount of biscuits that I eat (which is my only Achilles heel).’

What impacts your health? What is important to you?

‘It’s what I eat and the exercise I take. I take regular walks on the weekend and cycle every day. I play football. It’s important to keep your cardio healthy and muscle density. At my age, as you get older, muscle starts to disappear, replaced by fat.’

What are the good things about eating healthier and being more active?

‘It makes you feel more alert, more positive and helps your brain become more active. When you eat all the wrong thing things it makes you tired and sluggish. But if you eat all the right things, it helps you tune into more things a lot quicker because your brain and body are functioning properly.’

What does a typically active day look like to you?

‘I get up early, take a bit of exercise in the morning, maybe a bit of yoga or Pilates and stretching. I have a bit of porridge with some honey. I keep active during the day, with no snacking and have a meal at dinner.’

What are your hopes for the future?

‘Let’s hope I just live a long, illness-free life. If you eat properly and exercise it can help you avoid a lot of unnecessary illnesses such as diabetes or heart problems.’

What things might stand in your way of staying healthy?

It’s often cakes and biscuits. They are always in the way. When I go shopping, there are certain aisles I don’t walk down because it is just too much temptation.'

Thank you to Mr Frederick for allowing us to get an inside look at all the things he does keep active and healthy.

We look forward to seeing you in our next issue, where we will have a look at some quick and easy recipes that you can make at home!

‘Remember, no matter how you feel, get dressed, show up and never, ever give up.’

Have a lovely Half Term Break!
