Year 2 - The Great Fire of London

Year 2 have enjoyed learning about the UK in our unit of work 'A Journey' where they have been travelling to the different countries in the UK and learning historical events that have happened.

They have learnt about The Great Fire of London. They have worked extremely hard to make Tudor style houses, to represent those during the the 1666 fire and meticulously painted it and stuck some black stips to represent the beams of the Tudor houses. They finally recreated the city of London, including St Paul Cathedral.

This afternoon, we were able to lay our City of London on the playground and safely set fire to it. The children watched from a distance how very quickly the flames spread. We used little egg cups to attemped to put the fire out and notice how difficult this was!

 Ask your children why? Why did the fire spread? What has changed with the way houses are made now compared to 1666?

Children have particularly enjoyed learning facts, and reading some parts of Samuel Peppys diary to learn more about what happened.
