Year 3 - Ancient Egypt

Today was a really exciting day in Year 3! We had an amazing visit from an Ancient Egypt expert who brought lots of activities, artefacts, demonstrations and stories to share with us. 

The day started with a talk in the hall about Ancient Egyptian society, with some of the children playing the roles of the Pharoah, the vizier, the priests, scribes and craftsmen. Then the children had the opportunity to get hands-on with artefacts; visiting the mini museum that had been set up, and taking part in an archaeology dig. Some children even enjoyed dressing up as Ancient Egyptians with traditional costume and jewellery!

After that we had the opportunity to learn more about hieroglyphs - decoding some Ancient Egyptian poems that told us about the jobs people may have had. We also created Egyptian Art using reed pens and black ink. The children were really proud of their artwork and many chose to take it home to complete with pen and pencil. 

In the afternoon we all watched a mummification demonstration, learning about what the Egyptians did with the brain, the heart and some of the other organs. We learnt what was done with the body before the wrappings were applied and the mummy was put into the sarcophagus ready for the tomb. 

After that the children got to practise their hunting skills with bows and arrows, trying to hit their targets of a crocodile, hippo or lion (and avoid the sacred cat). They also learnt how to play a traditional Egyptian game called Senet. 

What an incredible (and busy) day! 

Additionally - some of the children popped out during the day to take part in the Primary Sports Day at the Academy, competing against other local primary schools. We are really proud to say that Year 3 placed first in their age group, and that Maylands won overall! A huge well done to the team that took part and represented our school.
