Year 1 Here We Are

Year 1 loved celebrating all things planet Earth this week. We began by exploring our local area on a walk, observing the different human and physical features we could see around us. We saw woods, schools, fields, houses, ponds, carparks and roads. Can your child tell you which are human (created by humans) and which are physical (naturally there)?

In honour of World Ocean Day, Year 1 attended a virtual live lesson by World Wide Fund for Nature, to learn all about the importance of our oceans and how we can protect them. Here are some facts the children learnt:

"Two thirds of our world is ocean and the biggest ocean is the Pacific Ocean"

"800 million people eat food from the ocean"

"Don’t put plastic in the sea, you should put it in the recycling bin or animals might think it is a jellyfish"

"You can’t catch too many fish or there won’t be enough left to make more babies"

In Science, we began our new unit of learning exploring Earth and Space. We learnt about the planet we live on, Earth, how it is different to neighbouring planets in the Solar System, and how the conditions make life possible. Then, we created our own artwork of planet Earth to show that there is both land and water on the surface. Ask your child what is special about planet Earth.
