9th June 2023 Learning Beyond the Classroom

We have a new initiative to encourage reading in the Library, starting this month.

Each half term, a class will be given a theme where they will be expected to use the library and find up to 5 books, based around that theme. Then during your library time, or even during playtimes when children have access to the library, they are encouraged to read these books over the half term.

By the end of the half term, the children will vote which of the books they enjoyed the most and why they enjoyed them.

Last half term's theme was 'Conservation' and the Eco-Committee helped to select the books for display. The 6 books that were on display were:

  • See Inside Planet Earth by Katie Daynes and Peter Allen
  • Out of the Blue by Alison Jay
  • Somebody Swallowed Stanley by Sarah Roberts
  • Tidy by Emily Gravett
  • Plastic Planet: How plastic came to rule the world by Georgia Amson-Bradshaw
  • The Great Paper Caper by Oliver Jeffers

After much deliberation, there were two books that the children enjoyed the most. These books were...

Somebody Swallowed Stanley by Sarah Roberts

and

The Great Paper Caper by Oliver Jeffers

What children had to say about these books:

'They all think Stanley is a jellyfish but he's not' 'Luckily the boy saves the turtle'

'It starts with a mystery to engage the reader' 'It makes people think about plastic pollution in a child friendly way'

'It shows not everyone know about deforestation, and that we need to tell others about what they are doing to our environment.'

Why not ask your child what their favourite book from the selection was and why?
