Today in Design and Technology Year 5 extended their learning about the Tudors and created Tudor Houses. They began by planning what their designs should look like by sketching and annotating their drawings. The children were able to make links in their learning from when visiting the Tower of London and what the houses looked like on 'Tower Green'. They were able to discuss the equipment and materials needed to make the house and the type of colour the house should be.

After planning the house and thinking carefully about the measurements, the children went on to start developing their ideas through making it. Independently, the children cut down pieces of doweling into accurate sizes using a handsaw to make the skeleton of the Tudor House. They worked fantastically in teams during this part, holding the wood carefully for one another and using good teamwork language. Afterwards, they used a glue gun to glue the doweling together to create the basis of the house. Once the house was made the children began to paint it, they thought carefully about which colours Tudor houses tended to be. The children came to a conclusion that they should be white with black beams and a brown tiled roof. Once the paint had dried the children were able to add in the windows and brickwork to the house.

The children finally finished their designs and were then able to then evaluate the process of their project. Each child was extremely reflective and thought of ways in which they could improve next time and what they thought was good about their model.

Well done Year 5 for showing excellent teamwork and communication skills when making your Tudor house!
