It has been a really busy week in Year 6 as we continue our RMS Titanic topic. In Chatta, children have learnt about the different factors that may have contributed towards the tragedy. We have also continued reading our class book 'The Titanic Detective Agency' - a mystery novel set on board the ship and featuring characters inspired by real people. The children have enjoyed putting themselves in the role of two of the main characters from the story and writing letters home about their experience on the journey so far.

There was another chance for children to show off their scientific enquiry skills this week with a materials investigation. Year 6 were given the challenge to investigate which material would make the best raft, if the Investigator found himself on board a sinking ship. Each group designed their own investigation, and chose how to record and present their results. Some groups measured how long the materials would float for, whilst others recorded which could bear the most weight.

In Maths we have continued to apply methods to find different types of averages; mean, median, range and mode. The children have also learnt how to use column division to give their answer as a decimal, and how to find 100%, when given a convenient percentage of the total. Here's an example to try at home: If 40% is 88, what is 100%?

Now that the clay has dried, the children enjoyed painting their alebrije sculptures in the style of Pedro Linares' original creations. They used different, bright colours for each feature of their creature. Next they'll add final details, and glaze their sculptures with PVA.
