Year 1 - Exploring

This week in Year 1, we were given a big surprise when we came into school to find that an alien had crash landed in our school and alien gloop everywhere! Luckily he was a friendly alien called Bob who had come to learn more about our planet, Earth. He wrote us a letter (in an alien language), which our teachers had to translate for us, asking lots of questions. We did some research about why Earth is so special and wrote some letters back to him. We found out things such as the Earth is 71% covered in water, there is a special bubble around the earth called the atmosphere which keeps oxygen in and that there is around 7 billion people on this planet. He has left us now, but we look forward to learning more and writing to him again soon.

We had out Forest School session on Tuesday this week, where we explored more of the forest. We found some plant shoots just coming out of the ground, finished creating fantastic fairy houses (which even had outdoor playgrounds) and moved large logs to build things, such as a see saw and a tree house.

Finally, on Friday it was RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. We were fortunate to be the first class to visit the science garden and use our new outdoor classroom. We used this area to look for birds, counted how many there were, drew the birds we saw and discussed what birds we would like to see. We also spent some time with Mrs Phillips, firstly talking about fire safety then roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate made on a fire. We also learnt about different tools that could be used to build things, such as our outdoor classroom and how to use them safely as well.
