The Wild West WOW Day - Year 6

Year 6 had an unforgettable WOW afternoon for their Wild West topic, inspired by the novel Holes by Louis Sachar. As the children entered the classroom, they noticed something unusual—the lights were dim, and the sound of the desert filled the air. Each child sat down with a spoon in their correct group, A–E, linking to the mysterious camp groups from the story.

Before they knew it, Miss Cole and Miss Hashem (both speaking in very convincing American accents!) handed out canteens and instructed the children to line up. “You’re off to dig!” they announced. Outside in the Science Garden, the heat was rising, and the adventure began. The children worked hard to dig small “holes,” discovering hidden treasures buried in the sand—lizards, fossils, coins, trainers, onions, and peaches.

Some of the children said:

“I wonder why there are so many onions?”

“I think we could be in America because Miss Cole and Miss Hashem are talking in an American accent! Maybe it’s Texas because of the desert heat!”

After a busy afternoon of digging and treasure hunting, the children headed upstairs for a themed lunch of porridge, crackers, and water—just like the characters in Holes! There were lots of laughs as they imagined life at Camp Green Lake.

Finally, the big reveal came: their new class book for the term would be Holes! The room filled with excitement and curiosity as everyone began to share their first thoughts and predictions. It was an immersive day of learning that brought the Wild West to life and left Year 6 eager to keep digging for more discoveries!
