Year 3 - Outdoor Classroom Day
Back to Latest News
This week we were excited to celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day 2024! As a Gold Learning Outside the Classroom mark holder, we love taking children's learning to new levels and giving them new and exciting experiences every week. Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to inspire and celebrate outdoor play and learning, at home and at school. On Outdoor Classroom Day itself, which has two dates each year, teachers celebrate with a special day outdoors for their class.
We started our day with some outdoor Maths, exploring 3d shapes. The children went on 3D shape hunts to spot shapes in the real world, and created their own using different equipment including Podley. They counted the faces, edges and vertices of each shape they created, recording their findings. Some children even made a dodecahedron for the first time!
In the afternoon we headed outside for our Science learning. The children have started a new topic all about skeletons. After learning the names of some of the bones in the human body they headed to the playground to create their own lifesize labelled diagram of the human skeleton. We were really impressed by the new vocabulary the children were using when working with their team. Ask your child to teach you some of the names at home!
This week the children learnt all about farming in Ancient Egyptian times, including the use of a shaduf to get water from the Nile to irrigate the crops. After discussing the way a shaduf works the children had a turn at making their own model using sticks and twine. They had to use a lot of patience and determination to get the balancing just right! Whilst in the quiet garden, Seal Class even spotted a beautiful green dragonfly.
We want to wish everyone a restful week at home, and look forward to seeing you all for the final half-term of Year 3 on Monday 3rd June! We also look forward to seeing the project that they will have created about an Ancient Egyptian King or Queen (see their home learning book for more information).
