22nd November 2023 Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our children at Maylands have been talking about what spirituality means to them and why they believe it is important. Each class has had different circle times discussing what spirituality is, if they have experienced and what it might look like. Around the school, the children have been speaking about spiritual moments and times that feel spiritual to them.

Here is what some of our children have said:

‘Spirituality is when we have a little rest.’ (EYFS)

‘You relax. By relaxing your body it helps your body to calm. It helps your body to stay healthy.’ (EYFS)

‘When I am outside I can hear the wind and the ducks quacking, it is very relaxing.’ (Year 2)

‘Spirituality is when it’s changing from winter to spring and I see the bluebells.’ (Year 3)

‘On the swing I felt spirituality. I closed my eyes and felt really calm because there was nothing on.’ (Year 3)

‘Spirituality is when I feel calm and peaceful.’ (Year 4)

‘Spirituality is something inside that makes you, you.’ (Year 5)

‘Spirituality to me is when you go into the zone, and you feel awe and wonder. It makes you think and feel-good things.’ (Year 5)

‘When I am by myself I feel inner peace. That is spirituality.’ (Year 6)

‘I think spirituality is being curious about what is around you.’ (Year 6)
