Year 1 Shopping Trip

This week, to introduce our new unit of learning 'Past and Present', the children were very excited to take a walk to their local shops. We discussed the different types of shops available in the present day, including a bakery, pharmacy, supermarket and post office, and which goods can be bought from each. We have begun to compare the similarities and differences of shopping habits today and in the past. Please talk to your child and any elderly family members about any changes you have observed in your lifetime, such as the introduction of contactless payment and online shopping. 

As part of our learning about shopping behaviours, we have been looking at different coins and notes in Maths. Children have practised identifying the coins and selecting correct coins to make amounts up to 10p. Can your child use coins at home to practise adding up different totals? How many ways can they find to make 10p? Can they use three coins to make 8p?

Rabbit and Squirrel Class have also been on Winter Walks, to observe seasonal changes in the environment. They completed a scavenger hunt to look for the signs of Winter. Ask your child to tell you what they have noticed about the changing seasons and discuss current weather.
