Year 6- Fossil Hunters

Year 6 have enjoyed being Super Scientists so far this term, where they are beginning to learn about Evolution.

We were very lucky to have the opportunity to explore some real fossils. The children were given some amazing examples of fossils, dating up to 55 million years old! Children were able to identify that the fossils could be preserved in many different ways, including body, trace and mould.  The children loved handling, studying and identifying the different types of plant and animal fossils in class. Ask them to tell you what these fossils can help us to learn. 

Following on from this learning, Year 6 began to explore how fossils can help us to identify how biological characteristics can be passed on through generations. The children began by finding out about the differences between biological and environmental characteristics, and why variation occurs. They did this by completing a Matching Game which involved matching the baby picture to the child in the class! The children were able to identify the child and could explain that they knew this because of the child’s biological characteristics.

The children then enjoyed showing their understanding through a Gummy Bear Genetics challenge, where they created family trees showing inherited characteristics in the offspring of gummy bears!

Well done to Year 6 for demonstrating critical thinking and questioning skills during our Science learning.
