Year 5 - Henry VIII Wow Day
Back to Latest News
Today, Year 5 were surpised by a vistor from Tudor Britain. Henry VIII visited Maylands this morning and taught Heron and Kingfisher class all about Tudor monarchs and what it would be like to live in Tudor Britian.
The morning started off with Henry VIII explaining about his life and the monarchs before and after his time. He then went into detail about what it would be like to live in Tudor Britain. The children were shocked to hear that the Tudors used a hole as a toilet and that overall hygeine was extremely poor.
Once the children had learnt all about The Tudors they were taught by Henry VIII how to play a game of jousting and then got to play one themselves. They really enjoyed the compeitive game and even got to use a jousting lance and a horse.
Some of our children said:
'I loved learning about the Tudors and then really getting to imagine what it was like to be a Tudor when playing the game of jousting.'
'I can't believe how much the plague affected the Tudors.'
'I loved learning about Henry VIII and his six wives. Catherine of Aragon was definitely his favourite.'
After the jousting game the children finished off with a quiz which they all enjoyed thoroughly. They showed fantastic listening skills and great understanding. This was also displayed in the Chatta they presented to their classes in the afternoon.
At the end of the day, we started reading our new book 'The Executioner's Daughter'. The book is based in Tudor Britain and focuses on the journey of a young 'basket girl'. The children are excited to continue reading and find out about her fascinating life.
Well done Year 5 for showing a love for learning and great engagement today.
Ask your child at home:
Would you have liked to live in Tudor Britain? Why or why not?
