Year 6 - Blood Models
Back to Latest News
This week in Year 6 we continued our Science learning about Human Biology by finding out about blood! Did you know – it takes under a minute for blood to circulate from the heart, around your body and back to your heart again? The children learnt about the different components of human blood and role each part plays, then followed a ‘recipe’ to create their own model of blood. We used cheerios to represent red blood cells, and marshmallows to represent white blood cells. Ask your child at home what role these different cells play in our body!
After being inspired by the Alebrijes we learnt about and saw during our Dia de Los Muertos week, the children decided to design their own in Art. They have been learning about different sculptures and will be creating their alebrijes from clay later this half term! Ask your child at home to tell you about their design, and how they have incorporated features that represent the elements.
In our topic learning we have learnt about the inspiration behind Disney’s Pocahontas. Did you know that she is based on a real person, but that Pocahontas was not her actual name, just a nickname meaning something like ‘playful little girl’ in her native language? After finding out more about Pocahontas, the children wrote an informative report about the famous Native American. The children also wrote non-chronological reports about the infamous ‘Yellow-Spotted Lizards’ from Holes, inspired by the animal pages we see in our monthly Whizz Pop Bang science magazines in class!
